Generator Auto-Start Feature is Not Operating

Created by John Jackson, Modified on Mon, 30 Jun at 2:32 PM by John Jackson

NOTE – The Auto-Start or ATS feature is NOT possible for a Manual Generator.

The Generator should have an ‘Auto’ or ‘Standby’ selection option within its Control Panel and this option MUST be selected for the Auto-Start function to be operational.

If the Generator Auto-Start is not activating / operating, then the first actions we recommend are to remove the ATS ‘Trigger’ Cable from GS or GV Pins of the Inverter, short the two wires together to close the loop to check if the Generator starts up ok. It may take upto 30 seconds for the Generator to auto-start.

If the Generator does not Auto-Start then please contact the supplier / manufacturer of the Generator for further assistance.

Next check that you have selected the correct GS or GV connectors for your Auto Start ‘trigger’ cable. NOTE – Depending on the Model of Inverter and the installed firmware revision, please consult the relevant Inverter User Manual and “Generator Integration” article per the link below to ensure you are using the correct GS or GV connector ports.

Then set the On Batt setting in Aux Load plus the Gen Start setting in Battery Settings to the same percentage value above the current SOC% value of the Batteries. These settings should close the LV Relay on the GS / GV Pins as the Gen Start 'trigger' which you can then test with continuity setting of a multimeter to confirm if they remain 'Open' or if they ‘Close’ as required. If the GS or GV connectors are not ‘Closed’ / ‘Short-Circuit’ please make a note or take images of the current settings of the various settings screens of the Inverter and isolate any PV, AC and/or Generator inputs. Next enter Basic Settings, then Reset tab to enable Factory Reset option and press ‘OK’. Enter Code 9999 and the Inverter will be set to Factory Defaults. The Alarm Beeper will sound as confirmation of Factory Reset so (if required) please select ‘Beeper Off’ in Basic settings.

Now power cycle the Inverter by turning Off the power Button on the side of the Inverter and wait for the LCD Display to go off too. Now Reboot the Inverter from Battery power Only and after approx. 4 minutes observe that the 'Normal' LED turns On. You have now rebooted the Inverter, it is in Normal, so now you can restore settings to those prior to Factory Reset and also restore the PV and AC/Generator Isolators to ON. The Gen On Batt and Gen Start settings should not have been affected by the Factory Reset, so test GS / GV connectors for continuity.

The GS / GV relay should now be closed and the ATS Cable can be reconnected. The Generator Auto Start function should now be restored and the Generator should start to charge the Batteries.

The Installer can now restore or amend the system settings as desired for the Generator to start and stop in accordance with end customer requirements and specifications.
